　文京区の音羽の丘の上に鳩山邸の美しい洋館が姿を現わしたのは、関東大震災の翌大正13年（1924）である。

　

　鳩山家は、衆議院議長の和夫（1856～1911）、総理大臣となった一郎（1883～1959）、外務大臣をつとめた威一郎（1918～1993）、さらに衆議院議員の由紀夫（1917生）、（郁夫1918生）、と4代にわたり指導的な政治家を生み育てた。

　

　この洋館を建てたのは一郎で、ここを舞台に、戦後政治の画期となた自由党（現・自由民主党）の創設が計られ、また首相として決断した日ソ国交回復の下準備も行われている。



　設計を手がけたのは一郎の友人の岡田信一郎（1883～1932）で、大正・昭和初期を代表する建築家として知られる。

　

　一郎の没後、傷みがひどくなったけれど、このたび大修復を加え、往年の輝きを回復した。修復に当たり、一郎、その夫人で教育者の薫、威一郎を記念する部屋を設け、公開されることになった。バラの庭を前に建つイギリス風の外観、ハトをモチーフとするステンドグラス、アダムスタイルの応接室、朝倉文夫作の和夫、春子夫妻像、などなど見るべきものは多い。



               Hatoyama Family Home
 The Hatoyama family's beautiful Wastern-style residence was built atop a hill in Bunkyo Ward's Otowa in 1924,the year following the Great Kanto Earthquage.
 The Hatoyama family spawned four generations of statesmen:Kauo(1856-1911),Speaker of the House of Representatives:Ichiro(1883-1959),Prime  Minister:Iichiro(1918-1993),Minister of  Foreign Attairs:and Yukio(1947-) and Kunio(1948-) ,members of the Hose of Representatives.
 This house was built by Ichiro and it was here that the formation of the Liberal Party (Presently) the Liberal Democratic Party,a landmark in postwar politics,was planned.It was also here that preliminaty preparations were made for the restoration of diplomatic relations with the former Soviet Union,a decision made by Ichiro during his tenuer as prime minister.
 The house was designed by Ichiro's friend Shinichiro Okada (1883-1932),who is known as a representative architect of the Taisho and early Showa periods.
 After Ichiro's death,the house,which had fallen into disrepair,was given a major renovation and restored to its former splendor.On this occasion,memorial rooms were established in honor of Ichiro,his wife Kaoru,who was also ana educator,and Iichiro,and house was opend to the public.The home has much worth seeing,includingana English-style drawing room,and sculptures of Kazuo and his wife.
